BACS Journal - vol 30

2:36 PM

This week at the Ballast Trust we took delivery of the latest edition the Business Archives Council of Scotland's journal Scottish Business and Industrial History

The journal formerly known as Scottish Industrial History has been published by the Business Archives Council of Scotland (BACS) since 1977 and is devoted to the dissemination of original historical research into all periods and facets of Scotland's industrial and commercial past.

The 30th volume of the journal includes the following articles:
  • The Making of a Victorian Clerk of Works: William Conradi and the Rebuilding of Glasgow University, 1866-1872 by Sam McKinstry and Ying Yong Ding
  • The Analysis of Labour Contracts in 18th and 19th Century Lead Mining: a Note on Archive Sources by Tim Barmby
  • A Relationship to Deliver Agricultural Innovation in Scotland: Thomas Pirie, George Greig and John Fowler & Co., 1869-1884 by Heather Holmes
  • A Short History of Britain's Export Credits Guarantee Department, 1919-1979 by Yuyu Sun
The Ballast Trust and the BACS have a long history of working together. Our founder William Lind first became involved with the Business Archives Council of Scotland in the 1970s and he was appointed Honorary Secretary of the BACS in 1975 and, in this capacity, he was active in rescuing records from a number of Scottish businesses and in surveying technical records and plans before the establishment of the Ballast Trust in 1988.

Today both the Ballast Trust Archivist and the Surveying Officer are members of the BACS exec committee so we have for the last couple of years taken on the role of distributing the journal. So next week BACS members can expect to find an envelope popping through their letterbox.

If you'd like to receive a copy of the journal, then why not join the BACS? Subscriptions start from £10, details here.
